Streptomycin Sulphate is a first-generation aminoglycoside antibiotic that holds a significant place in medical history as the first effective treatment for tuberculosis, discovered by Selman Waksman in 1943 — a discovery that earned the Nobel Prize. Derived from Streptomyces griseus, it remains an important therapeutic agent for selected infectious diseases.
Despite the development of newer agents, Streptomycin continues to be recommended by WHO as a second-line agent for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and is essential for the treatment of certain zoonotic diseases. It is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
