Metronidazole

Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

Metronidazole is activated by reduction of its nitro group within anaerobic organisms, forming toxic metabolites that damage bacterial DNA. It is the drug of choice for protozoal infections like giardiasis and trichomoniasis.
