Spectinomycin Hydrochloride (Pharma Grade) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by Streptomyces spectabilis, first discovered by Mason et al. in 1961. It demonstrates high antibacterial activity against Neisseria gonorrhoeae (including β-lactamase producing strains) and moderate activity against many Enterobacteriaceae species. It also shows good activity against Ureaplasma urealyticum.
In human medicine, Spectinomycin HCl serves as an important alternative therapy for penicillin-allergic patients. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of gonococcal infections and is also used in combination therapy for pelvic inflammatory disease. Its oral absorption is superior to other aminoglycosides such as neomycin sulphate, kanamycin sulphate, and gentamicin sulphate. It is also the safest aminoglycoside for injectable administration.
